International Polar Bear Day – February 27

Did you know that February 27th is International Polar Bear Day? πŸ€ͺ I didn’t. Even though the official day has passed, it's never too late to celebrate these amazing animals. We can still appreciate and help protect polar bears any day of the year.

Why this day? This day coincides with the period when polar bear moms and their babies are cozy in their dens.

The Arctic is warming, and with it, the sea ice is melting. This means polar bears have less time to hunt and gather the energy they need, a situation that's especially hard for mothers raising their cubs. 😞

This day serves as a reminder of the challenges facing polar bears and their rapidly-changing Arctic habitat. It also brings awareness to the females and cubs denning during this time.

Here are some fascinating facts about polar bears to celebrate their day πŸ»β€β„οΈ

  • They're the largest carnivores on land.

  • A polar bear’s skin is black, its fur is translucent, and it only appears white because it reflects visible light.

  • Cubs generally stay with their mother for up to 2 1/2 years, learning how to hunt, feed, swim, and survive.

  • The bears are found in five range states: the U.S. (Alaska), Canada, Russia, Greenland, and Norway (Svalbard).

  • Polars bears may travel more than 1,000 km in one season.

  • The IUCN estimates there are currently about 26,000 polar bears worldwide. But without action on climate change, we could lose all but a few polar bear populations by the end of the century.

How can we help? Learning more about polar bears and supporting organizations like Polar Bears International are great steps towards making a difference.
